You would copy all the files out of the root web folder on your computer up to your site through FTP (Filezilla). You would then export the MySQL database and import that through Cpanel or phpMyAdmin.

I will be holding a workshop on doing this so check the video for the link. Otherwise, send me a message through YouTube and I’ll find a video link online explaining how to get this done.

I made a site with joomla on my localhost, I want to get the site in the air but can you tell me what files I should upload in a free host? or isn’t this possible?

Thanks,

Sure, to some extent you can. The code that drives Joomla as well as the web platform are still open source.

It’s unfortunate but some website design companies and marketing folks attempt to pass off Joomla as something they built. They may strip out components in an attempt to rebrand it.

I’m completely honest with my clients about the website platforms I use and explain the benefits of open source; especially that Joomla can be supported by more than one person.

Yes it can but the bulk of the functionality will come via the installation of multiple extentions. A lot of these extentions will themselves have ‘extention specific’ add-ons to increase their usability. For instance you could install a blogging extention and then a seperate add on to comment/rate individual blogs.

For more robust ’social networking’ the first thing you’d install would be community builder. It alone has dozens of add-ons itself.

what the heck does (lol) mean????!!!

Joomla can pull popular social networking because most big sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIN and Myspace offer API’s (allow applications to exchange info).

I haven’t setup Joomla as self contained social networking site but if you’re looking for something like that, check out Ning.

Tagging is usually done by the poster/author.

There are many modules and components for ratins.

Too big a topic for comments. Contact me offline if you still have questions.

Can Joomla support social networking? For example, the ability of customers to upload articles on a topic? the ability for others to meta tag and rate the article?

Great. The stuff on the right.
I believe that if I used Joomla on the K-Rune project page, we wouldn’t have any space for new members :P I use Joomla on 42 though. Love it.

Its not just a template..you can make your website look like anything..any design what ever you want. If you need help with the design you can get a developer for cheap..like $6 an hour..I use them all the time.

A great place to check out is opensourcecmsdotcom where you can try out the backend administration of Joomla and other content management systems.

Hi there!
As with every way of building a site, there are advantages and disadvantages.
What I’d like to do now is how to learn to make my own Joomla templates, to have some more freedom in how a site I build, looks.
Mind you, there are virtually MILLIONS absolutely wonderful FREE templates out there… but still…in spite of being just a hobbyist, I don’t want to be dependant on templates made by others. So there, I want to free myself from becoming a “template slave” (heehee).

Installing templates means you upload a zipped file and Joomla does the rest. It’s built into Joomla just like many other Content Management Systems.

youtubby01,

I hear you. Regular websites are often built from templates as well so they’re the same beast in that respect. Graphic designers work from a template outline when they create websites. Dreamweaver and Contribute utilize “wireframes” of CSS and html (the bones) streched over colors (the fur), the same as Joomla.

Joomla is amazing. Through modules, components, plugins and mambots visitors can join your site, register for events, interact, rate articles and more.

philly1537 @ 7:35 am

hey how do you install the templates features

Joomla is just template template template.
What do you mean by flexibility?
it’s Not flexible at all. It’s based on boxes here and boxes there. If you’re not able to make you’re own template, you’re stuck on the creativity of other people. I have NO idea why people THINK that Joomla is great. And god, they ALL look alike.
